Gedser to Rostock and B&B Hotel

The ferry takes two hours, which gives me enough time to freshen up in the rather basic men’s facilities on board. I have a proper wash as best I can, then change my trousers and shirt before heading to the bar for some pasta carbonara.

I get a good-sized portion, and I feel that I really need it. A few minutes before eight o’clock, I make my way down to the lower deck, where I have locked up my bike.

I have to wait together with another cyclist until all the trucks have left the ferry. Apparently, it has something to do with safety.

Finally, we are allowed off the ferry. I follow the terminal markings, with bicycle symbols painted on the asphalt, to find my way out of the area. Somewhere along the way I take a wrong turn, but I don’t realise it until I have already been cycling for more than half an hour.

My mobile connection isn’t working at all, so Google Maps isn’t much help.

After about an hour and a half, I finally cycle into the centre of Rostock. Now I need to find a hotel. After searching for quite some time, I find a suitable one, just a kilometre or so from the main square — B&B Hotel.

I book two nights and get a room on the fourth floor. I am allowed to leave my bike in a garage, although unfortunately it can’t be locked. I take all my bags with me and lock up the bike and trailer as well as I can.

Up to my room, which looks nice and fresh. I get out of my clothes and head straight for the shower. I turn on the hot water…

What a feeling to stand under warm running water after a full day of cycling in the rain and a headwind.

There is no bar open at the hotel, and the coffee machine charges a fortune for a cup of coffee — and it usually doesn’t even taste like coffee.

So I take out my camping stove and make my own coffee. That way, I can decide how strong I want it. I enjoy the coffee together with a small glass of whisky.

I watch Ocean’s Twelve more or less casually, dubbed into German. It feels a little strange — and rather amusing — to hear George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon speaking German…

I fall asleep shortly after 12:30 a.m.

More from Rostock later.
